Biography
In my previous life as a neurobiologist, I spent many hours taking black and white film photomicrographs of the brain – arguably the most beautiful and complex structure in the known universe. I retired from research and photomicroscopy in 2005, but my interest in photography continued. In November, 2010, I stopped by the studio of photographer Judith Vejvoda in Dixon, NM, to ask for her advice on setting up a darkroom in my home in Taos. Instead of advice, she offered me an invitation: to come to her darkroom at Northern New Mexico College and study film photography with her. In January 2011, I began a life-changing adventure in black and white photography, catalyzed by Judith, and under her guidance, my morphogenesis to fine art photographer began. Shot with a variety of vintage cameras, my classic black and white film photographs feature abstractions of architectural and natural forms and emphasize the interplay between light and shadow. Printed in my own darkroom, these photographs continue the tradition of Minor White, Ray Metzger, and Jan Gruber. My work has been exhibited in group and one-woman shows throughout New Mexico, and in California, New York, Oregon, Berlin and Barcelona. In 2015, my photograph, “Sacred Spaces,” was chosen as the poster image for the Taos Fall Arts Festival – the first photograph chosen for this honor in the 41 years of the festival’s existence, and the first abstract image. In 2015 and 2018, I was a finalist in Fine Art Photography for the Julia Margaret Cameron Award, an international competition for women photographers. In December 2017-January 2018, I had a one-woman show at the Harwood Museum of Art in Taos, where my work is also in the permanent collection. My work may also be found in private collections in Albuquerque, NM, Arlington, VA, Boston, MA, Bozeman, MT, Chicago, IL, Columbia, MD, Denver, CO, Eugene, OR, Ft. Collins, CO, Houston, TX, Los Angeles, CA, Medicine Park, OK, New Orleans, LA, New York City, NY, Ormond Beach, FL, Philadelphia, PA, Richmond, CA, Santa Fe, NM, Scarsdale, NY, San Antonio, TX, Sedona, AZ, and Taos, NM.
